I played the demo of Gigantic Army and based on that I'd say it's going to end up being the best 2D mech game ever.  Recap will be happy to know it's perfect for a joystick (Shock Troopers-style shot fixing, dashing is done with a double tap, punching is automatic at close-range.)

I don't know but the old issues featured more Japanese artists that others, hence still worth looking at today.  The old Howard & Nester comics are great and use Moebius-like hatching and stippling.  There are Star Fox and Super Metroid comics like that as well.

Also remember it's the Rakugaking we're talking about.  He puts out a ton of stuff.

Recap, I have a bunch of old Nintendo Power scans with a ton of his artwork in it.  I'll be uploading more of that over the months.  If I ever get a scanner again I can upload the art he did for the SS Kaitei Daisensou manual.

Thanks Schwerer.

Well it's a platformer from Europe so you know you're gonna get gnarled forests, but as far as that goes it's okay.

The character designers should probably go watch The Triplets of Belleville and come back to the drawing board, but other than that it looks pretty good I think.

Looks promising.  I'm not a fan of the Bruce Timm style (which is basically to carve out all the expressiveness for easy animation) but for game sprites it could work.

So the men are injecting steroids and the women are injecting heroin.  What the hell SNK?  Anyway, still looks like a step behind 11, but ahead of SSFIV.

That's hideous, and not in the way they intended.

The moves look visually interesting but it doesn't look like there's any technique or strategy behind it, like Battletoads.  Especially since the other enemies take a time out when you're slicing their friends' bodies apart.  Maybe this is just an easier level, but based on what's shown game just looks like a giant 2D Quick Time Event.

This game and its prequel look really fun.  Too bad its on a system I'll never get, and wasn't made fifteen years ago.

Ocelot is right about Japanese developers digging their own ditches.  Relegate 2D to the Fisher-Price consoles and surprise, the public thinks 2D is infantile and not worth the price of the worst 3D game.

That's understandable I guess.  I still think there are a handful of NES games that look better than a lot of the PC Engine games of the time.  Ninja Ryuukenden II, Street Fighter 2010, and Moon Crystal would probably be the best examples.

Western developers aping Mario is obvious, but look what Data East did with Tatakae Genshijin 2 for example.  You're right that there's still a bunch of awesome side-scrolling action games but for every Hagane and Super Shinobi there were 30 Tatakae Genshijin 2s.

I wish games like Kickmaster, Kage, Rockman IV, Metal Storm, and Captain Saver were used as blueprints for the 16-bit era.  Instead, most developers thought it prudent to endlessly recreate Super Mario Bros. with worse characters and stages.

Anyway, I was planning on doing 20 or so NES/FC reviews before moving to 16-bit.  Hopefully Recap can still enjoy the text anyway.

"mate M. to play a game"

What's that?

Platinum Games' next game has been announced, for what we don't know yet but let's rule out Wii.  It's an FPS, because Japanese gaming isn't dead.  Seriously though I think all the JFPS (lol) have been pretty notable at least in terms of experimentation so I'm really interested to see what Platinum Games will bring to the table.

The trailer is basically worthless and shows mostly live-action humans in CG environments.  What is this, Crusader: No Remorse?

Looks decent but I think they could have updated it a little more.  Doesn't look like it'll compare with the Bangai-O series.

Huge gallery of Gamest scans from the site After Burners.  Not complete scans though.  They include the cover, table of contents, and a section for behind the scenes type stuff with staff artwork and interviews.

For an example of how awesome this is, here's a scan featuring an interview with Irem plus some design documents from R-Type.

No, it was cleaned up from an image I found on another site.  I do have the game, so I should probably flip through the manual to see if there's anything cool in there I could add.

I couldn't get too far into Goku without messing up.  I'd really like to get an arcade stick but I always end up buying a game instead.

Yes, I didn't stray from the Intended Way, but I did use autofire.  It was the SS version too.
