What the fuck do they think this is, 1996? How can anyone not see how ugly that shit is compared to the original.

HEAVEN VARIANT is an indie side-scrolling action game under development for PC by Zanrai Interactive, a very small band (or rather gang) of developers headquartered in Dallas, Texas, USA. The game is a modernized throwback to the golden age of 2D action games, and the game’s presentation and musical style is heavily influenced by classic shooters and animation of the 1980′s and 90′s. The title will be released digitally. Technical jargon ahead: HEAVEN VARIANT is not a hori bullet hell shooter and with regard to genre sides closer to the arcade/action-shooter from yesteryear.

http://zanrai.com/heavenvariant/
In Heaven Variant, players can at any time sacrifice their movement to stabilize their secondary weapon’s aim in any direction they choose. Our team aims to blend the modern sensibilities of the twin stick shooter with the progression, style, and power-ups from traditional shoot ‘em ups. We are designing Heaven Variant for use with a twin stick controller (which feels very natural), but if you don’t have a twin stick controller you can use your mouse and keyboard instead, and use a cursor on screen to aim in the direction you want.
Pobres necios.

It really seems impossible to stop these people. And they are churning out this shit at such a rate, that in order to keep trashing them we'd have to turn reviewing "indie" trash into a full-time job. It really boggles the mind how much time, money and effort is going into this by-now gigantic 2D "indie" scene, the long term result of which is that not a single one of these games, not a single title that comes out of this scene, will ever be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great games of the past (or even with mediocre ones!), never mind surpass them. And everyone else in the industry besides us is doing their utmost to make sure that this will never change.

It just mirrors the official, professional market in that regard, doesn't it? And wait a couple of years onwards.

I don't see a close equivalence with the professional market. There are some similarities (the general lack of difficulty and dumbing down, for example), but you still get stuff like Senjou no Valkyria, Operation Darkness, Far Cry 2, Vanquish and Bayonetta that move things forward. In the "indie" market, there seems to be no moving forward whatsoever.
The closest parallel I can see, is with the European (mainly British) home computer scene in the 80's and early '90s (and specifically the action genres). Countless games that are practically unplayable now -- though still better than the "indie" trash (except if my memory is being too kind on the former...)

Fuck me, I thought the game looked pretty crap and boring after the first trailer, but that second trailer impressed me so much that I just ordered the MVS. Good thing they delayed it, those graphic artists really went all out. I hope it gets delayed more if those artists can produce work like that!

I don't see much of an improvement. While the dragon boss is not bad, it looks misplaced. Much like the shooting phase's background. The whole thing looks now like a collage with no actual art direction whatsoever, if you ask me. The Thunder Force "homage" has been stretched too much, too.
Gotta ask -- why in the world ordering the MVS cart when a cheap DC version is coming soon enough?
Offline
No consistent art direction was my first problem with the game, but the new intro and sprites look good enough that I will give it a shot. Whether you want to admit it or not, this is some top level pixel art. The thunderforce homage doesn't worry me because the sprites in the shooting section are incredibly designed and you have to remember the rest of the game is a complete Turrican 3 rip off anyway.
The full game will have to be played through to see how well the art direction fits together, but its already 50 times better looking than what it looked like in the first trailer.
I got the MVS because I wanna run it on arcade hardware and don't want loading screens. Also If I decide to sell it I will get most if not all of my money back in the future anyway.

Stasis is an adventure game that puts you in control of John Maracheck, a man searching for his family in a seemingly abandoned research facility. Going back to classic adventure game mechanics, you are required to solve puzzles and use objects around you to progress and to find Maracheck’s family.
Graphically, Stasis is fairly unique in the adventure game genre, opting for highly detailed isometric graphics, as opposed to the more classic ‘side on’ views of other adventure games. Richly detailed rooms and fluid animations create an immersive environment for the player to explore, with danger lurking in every shadow.
